Fall Morning With Fog And Frost – Art Photography In Alberta

Fall Morning With Fog And Frost – Art Photography In Alberta

Fall mornings can be quite amazingly beautiful, especially with a layer of frost and fog and sunshine streaming from above.  Such was yesterday morning for us, here in Edmonton.  I took my camera out after seeing what the light looked like, filtered through a lovely fog that lifted off the river and floated to my street.  I didn’t have much time to wonder too far, so just took a stroll with our dog in our neighbourhood off leash park.  A bit chilly with only about 1 degree Celsius at the beginning, but, with the sun shining bright, it soon warmed up enough to start melting the frost from everything and turning it into a gorgeous dew. Well then, I thought, I must go back and grab my macro lens as well. Such opportunities are not to be wasted.. So this is what I saw. Enjoy!

Fairies – Conceptual photography with Fuji X

Fairies – Conceptual photography with Fuji X

Do fairies exist?  I wanted to find out with my camera. The results are a little different from the norm.  The session proved to be a lot of fun specially when working with a professional model.  Kate was just plain awesome!  She knew exactly what to do, how to pose … it was perfect.  The fuji cameras I was shooting with did not disappoint  in the least.  The two lenses I was using, 56mm f1.2 and the 23mm f1.4 were great for the task and worked really well.  I also had a Canon 580EX flash on hand, but that’s coming up later…. Enjoy!

Summer Macros (From My Own Backyard)

Summer Macros (From My Own Backyard)

Our summer is pretty much over.. All the colorful flowers, pretty soon, will become just memories. After the first killer frost of the season there aren’t many of my beauties left..  I’m glad I have managed to get some pictures taken while they were there, pretty and fresh, a delight to watch.  I am going to enjoy looking at the pictures during the cold season, I’m sure.  I will also enjoy sharing more of them in the following months.  I hope you will be able to find as much enjoyment in looking at them as I do.

Alberta Canola Sunrise at Villeneuve Airport – Landscape photography

Alberta Canola Sunrise at Villeneuve Airport – Landscape photography

Early morning. Hordes of mosquitoes, tall wet grass, and me, frolicking with my Fuji X-Pro1 camera and a Fuji 10-24mm lens, trying to get a good angle on a beautiful Alberta sunrise.  I stopped on the highway near the back of Villeneuve airport, trying the catch the Boing 737 parked there in the middle of a canola field. I really like the juxtaposition of a big passenger jet just sitting there in a farmer’s field.  The whole story is that the new Edmonton Aviation Museum is going to be built on that spot, and the jet is the first to arrive at the spot.  I wanted the images before any buildings or construction would ruin a beautiful view.  The fog that was rolling in from the fields that morning was an added bonus. Since Fuji introduced the quite amazing 10-24mm f4 lens, it has been almost permanently attached to either the X-Pro1 or the XT1 Fuji cameras.  I am primarily a landscape photographer, although I do not shy from other forms of photography.  Alberta is perfectly suited for landscape photography.  Not only there are flat sea of prairies, but mountains, lakes and huge huge skies.  It’s a beautiful place, and living here gives me an opportunity to capture it.  The added bonus of not having to travel very far, is a blessing, specially on those early summer mornings.

Smokin’ – Conceptual Portrait Photography with Fuji XT1

Smokin’ – Conceptual Portrait Photography with Fuji XT1

When I started with my photography, years and years ago, I was never keen on photographing people.  I was once told that my images, although very nice, looked like post cards.  They never featured my friends or family, only the nature and landscapes surrounding us. I wasn’t deterred by it, and kept making images the way I liked.  One day, that changed.  I wanted to try something new, something different, and wondered if I would be able to make images of humans.  After a while I found that I actually liked directing and coming up with ideas for a model to do.  I always was intrigued with strange ideas, that were possible to shoot.  I was never good at painting or photoshopping, so I never had any inclinations creating images that way.  There are much better artists that come to mind, like Renee Robyn.  I settled on trying to get my ideas in camera, using conventional methods. Women, fedoras, and cigars.  I guess one might say that this isn’t an original idea, but then again there aren’t a lot of original ideas left :). I just wanted to put my little spin on this, and I think it came out quite good.  It’s still not exactly what I wanted and imagined, so I will have to re-shoot this concept or continue the story 🙂 .  Of course this was shot entirely with Fuji XT1 and X-Pro1 cameras with 2 lenses, a Fuji 56 f1.2 and Rokinon 85mm f1.4.  I like the length of the Rokinon lens, but the Fuji is so much superior in every regard, and it has auto focus.  Of course both lenses were set to the widest apertures for maximum depth of field.  Fuji lens performed perfectly, fast, sharp and beautiful for portrait photography.  Rokinon wasn’t bad, a bit soft wide open, but overall very good lens for the money.  Here are some images from the session.

Fuji in Europe Part 27 – Last day in Nuremberg

Fuji in Europe Part 27 – Last day in Nuremberg

It has finally come to this.  Last in day in Nuremberg, and my good friend from Hooked on Europe decided that it would be good to go out on the streets again, and try some fuji night shooting.  We started off early, before the sun went down.  Which allowed me to catch some images with the golden light of the setting sun.  Nice long shadows, beautiful colors, great pictures.  It was a great finish to a wonderful day spent in the quiet atmosphere of the Altenburg Castle, then wondering the old streets of Bamberg.  Luckily I was leaving in the afternoon the next day, so I had time to go and spend the evening in great company, taking pictures of this beautiful city of Nuremberg.
