Chasing Aurora

Chasing Aurora

There are a lot of spectacular photographs of northern lights on internet. Beautiful lights dancing on the night sky are quite amazing to behold. However, it is not as easy as you would think to get a good shot of them. It, often, requires hours of waiting for the sky to turn dark enough in summer or freezing your bottom on location in winter. Sometimes, you won’t get a good shot regardless. Other times, you get a surprise, and they show up, even without prior notification. It is always a game of chance. Here is a selection of shots from many night outings over the last few years. Some were great, some – not so. It has always been fun, even if, a bit scary on occasions…

A Night at Elk Island

A Night at Elk Island

One early summer night I wanted to go out to Elk Island for some nighttime photography. I wanted to shoot Milky Way, despite of the fact that one has to wait a long time for the sky to darken sufficiently. Imagine our surprise when instead of stars we saw a lovely display of northern lights. Well, I wasn’t about to cry about it, would you? I took the opportunity and came back with a few lovely shots. Here are some of them. Enjoy!

Summer Memories (at Wabamun Lake)

Summer Memories (at Wabamun Lake)

Summer memories.. It’s so nice to have them during those long winter nights, when the cold wind is blowing, snow covers the world and all you want to do is snuggle under a blanket with a nice warm cup of coco and a good book… Summer world is so much more colorful and vibrant than winter can ever be. I get a lot of enjoyment from looking at the pictures from our numerous outings, especially when monochromatic winter world is starting to get to me. So for all those of us, who suffer from the same malady here is a bit of colorful summer photography from one of our visits at Wabamun Lake, located about an hour drive west of Edmonton. Enjoy!

Memories of Harvest

Memories of Harvest

It is hard to only be able to see winter for months on end. It lasts so long, here in Alberta, that the need to turn to memories of warmer, more colorful months is often overwhelming.  As much as the weather is nice right now, we still have a lot of snow on the ground and I find myself missing colors and warmth of summer months. I’m quite happy that I am able to easily indulge in seeing pictures I took during those months and remind myself of more pleasant times. And, since I am not a selfish person, I am quite content to share them in hope of making others feel a little bit better, a little bit warmer and a little bit happier.  These were taken several years ago, during a couple of lovely late summer evenings spent driving around rural Alberta in search of a nice sunset location.  I really hope they will brighten your day and make the long winter just a bit more livable.  Enjoy!

A Winter Visit to the Rockies

A Winter Visit to the Rockies

A while back we took a day trip to the mountains.  We like to do this from time to time, even if it means that we end up spending most of a day driving.  We get up early, pack sandwiches and snacks, winter gear and cameras and take our family out to the Rockies. There is just something that draws us there over and over again… If we are lucky, we can catch a nice sunrise on the way, which is what happened during this particular outing.  It’s hard to predict the weather on the arrival. Sometimes we have sunny skies, sometimes low clouds obscure the views, creating a darker mood.  Mountains are unpredictable and one has to plan for all sorts of eventualities and take advantage of all opportunities. And, no matter the conditions, I always end up with a few pictures to take home and share with you guys. It was no different this time. So, without further ado, here are my memories from one winter day trip to Jasper National Park. Enjoy!

Elk Island At Night

Elk Island At Night

It is an interesting experience to visit Elk Island at night.  We are a city creatures, not very comfortable with being in nature without the ability to see.  And then, there are the noises. It is so eerie to stand in the middle of nowhere, where it is pitch black and so quiet that every noise carries a long way. Hard to judge the distance separating us from the animals making that noise.  The coyotes are close by and call to each other quite often. A bison male is walking through the forest, somewhere in the vicinity.. An owl is hooting somewhere close by.. But what you hear is not as scary as what you don’t.  One time, not that long ago, we were positioned on the other side of Bison Loop shooting northern lights. Close proximity to the road, as annoying as it is because of the frequent traffic, was very lucky for us that time.  It was very quiet so we were so surprised when one of the cars crossing by spooked a large moose heading straight towards my spot.  Fortunately the animal changed direction and run away, without getting too close to me… Needless to say, we packed our gear up and moved somewhere else, where there were a bit more people close by.. Regardless of those close calls and spookiness of the night at the park I absolutely love going there to shoot the sky.  You can see so many stars there! The sky can be so very beautiful. Judge for yourselves..
