Scotland with Fuji – Kilt Rock

Scotland with Fuji – Kilt Rock

Wind, sound, beautiful light and great views – these are the memories I keep from our morning trip to Kilt Rock on the Isle of Skye.  There was the Mealt Waterfall there and the sea and another rainbow to see, after we got sprinkled by the rain…  The wind was playing in the rods of the safeguard on the edge of the cliff. I’ve tried to record the sound, but was unsuccessful, but the experience was quite unforgettable.  All I could bring you back are the views, so here they are. So very pretty…

Scotland with Fuji – Skye – First Impressions

Scotland with Fuji – Skye – First Impressions

It was rather late when we’ve finally gotten to Skye and we didn’t have too much time to wonder about before we got to our accommodations. However, we still managed to make time to take a couple of stops. First was at Portree (to gather some supplies, mainly, but couldn’t resist a short stroll down to the water ;D) and, of course, we had to stop by the Old Man of Storr.  By the time we got to that famous landmark it was getting dark, heavy clouds were covering the tops of the rocks, the wind was strong and it rained (again). However, we still managed to find some energy to climb a bit of a hill, through a very wet meadow, far enough to pass the power lines that would spoil our pictures.  In conditions like this, one develops a healthy appreciation for a camera that is weather proof.  So glad I took my Fuji with me, cause I would not be brave enough to take the few shots I did, being afraid I’d ruin my camera. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to bring any good shots of the Old Man with me regardless, though, because the wind was so strong that I had to hold on to my brother who caught me before I fell of the ledge, we have chosen to set our try pods on. However, I’ve managed to get a few wonderfully moody pictures in, that weren’t moved by the wind. After that, all that was left for us, was to get to Staffin and find our B&B… The next morning brought the sunshine back and when I woke up just before sunrise, I could not resist heading outside to explore, just a bit, before the rest of our company got up. And the views, right in front of our place, were gorgeous.  My first day on Skye has started with a beautiful sunrise and the first out of 5 rainbows I’ve seen that day. I don’t think I’ve ever seen more rainbows in the span one day!! As first impressions go, I was not disappointed in the least 😀

Scotland with Fuji – Following Highlander

Scotland with Fuji – Following Highlander

With any new country we visit we try to find some point of reference while planning a trip. Such was the case during our first visit to Scotland, four years ago, when we decided to visit Glenfinan, a place of birth of a fictional character Connor MacLeod, from the movie “Highlander” (the original, not the re-makes.. ;D). This time around, I have managed to visit the famous Eilean Donan Castle, where some of the scenes from the movie were filmed. And what a place it is!  My first stop over, was on our way to Skye, during early evening.  It was overcast, and the light wasn’t fantastic but, I think, I have managed to capture some nice shots, all things considered. So, without further delay, here they are, my memories from the chase, after the fictional character from one of my all time favorite movies. Enjoy!

Onward we go – Scotland with Fuji

Onward we go – Scotland with Fuji

The thing about any long journey is that you don’t mind the stops on the way. Each one such stop, during this trip, was lovely and made us more and more eager to continue the drive to see what else is there. What new treasure we were going to encounter.. The clouds were heavy with rain, yet again,  and we needed to move on in order to get to our destination before the end of the day… We left Glen Coe and drove on to the next stop – St. Dubhthach’s Church and Burial Place. We took only one beak in between, but boy, what a view it was, when the clouds suddenly opened up and the rays of sun went straight down to illuminate the waters of one of the lakes we have been passing .. It was.. pure magic! And, as it usually is with magic, it lasted only a moment.. Good thing I had my Fuji with me and took the picture (or two), in attempt to capture the light as it shone.. Alas, the time was running so we drove on and eventually took a pleasant half hour, or so, visiting another picturesque location. The place was peaceful. The clouds were heavy, giving a nicely dramatic background to the surrounding mountains. The old ruins of a church and the beautifully maintained resting place of generations of people who lived their lives close by was inviting.. If you are ever close to St. Dubhthach’s Church, take a moment and visit. It’s well worth the effort.

Scotland with Fuji – Beautiful Glen Coe

Scotland with Fuji – Beautiful Glen Coe

I have fallen in love with Glen Coe, the first time we have had a pleasure to pass by it in 2012. In late April the colors that blanket the mountains are amazing. All those browns, yellows and rusts with a bit of green look like amazing velvet blanket woven over the ground. So many textures and points of interest just by the road. One of these days I would like to be able to wonder about this place. Take one of the trails into the mountains and lose myself in wilderness.. This time around though we did not have time to explore so it was just a short stop over and a race with rain, yet again, to take some shots without my lens being covered with drops of water.  Once again, the Fujis that I took on this trip did not disappoint. I hope you like what came out of them as much as I do ;D

Summer Alberta Prairie Sunset

Summer Alberta Prairie Sunset

There were so many images from last year that never made it to these pages.  Going through them last night I kept wondering, why?  Isn’t it the reason we make images to show them in public?  It seems I’ve been really procrastinating in this regard, as the images just kept piling up, at least I put the time to actually edit them.  I think it’s high time to clear out the back log, and start sharing these.

Living in Edmonton is a bit of unique situation.  We are too far from the mountains for a daily trip, so we concentrate on what we have here in abundance.  The Alberta prairies can offer a lot of beautiful image making opportunities.  Lakes, forests, wildlife, and we can’t forget the big big skies.  These images were one of those little trips that we love to take during the week.  Days a long in the summer time, giving us a lot of time to find a good location or two.  Enjoy!
