Foggy Spring Morning at the Park

Foggy Spring Morning at the Park

Photographers love fog. It gives pictures an interesting mood.  If it isn’t too thick and allows sunshine through you get a bit of glow, if not, there is always an element of mystery to work with. I was lucky enough, one fine morning in early spring, to be able to go shooting, while a nice fog was covering everything.  Because it was disappearing rather quickly, there was no time for a lot of shooting, but what I did get, picture-wise, I like. Hope you do, too!

From Abraham Lake to Banff – a Short Winter Ride Through the Rockies

From Abraham Lake to Banff – a Short Winter Ride Through the Rockies

You never know what weather you encounter when you go to the mountains. Winter, especially, is the time when you need some caution, while planning any trip and sometimes you need to adjust your plans accordingly.  Originally we have planned to come back from Abraham Lake through Jasper, but because of road conditions we have decided to take the road to Banff instead and avoid the nasty hills one has to go through near Columbia Icefields.  It was a beautiful winter day, with fresh snow covering the landscape and millions ice crystals reflecting the sun.  We had time to stop here and there and admire the beautiful winter world, and practice some fine (if I say so myself) photography, too ;D Sometimes, even I, do love winter! ;D

Brilliant Morning in the Rockies

Brilliant Morning in the Rockies

Our latest trip to the Rockies was very successful.  Not only did we get good conditions for Abraham Lake ( Abraham Lake with Fuji and Film ) but the rest of the day was full of wonderful views.  When sun rose high enough to illuminate the world we have been given a chance to experience magic. And if you see magic, you better make sure you take pictures of it, right?! Well, we did… Took a long stop over at Preachers Point, right by Abraham Lake and gave ourselves a long wile to walk around and capture the world covered with ice crystals, shiny and brilliant and absolutely fantastic. For all the times we have visited the mountains, I have never seen anything like it. Take a look! It’s Nature at her best!

Are Winter Sunrises Easy?

Are Winter Sunrises Easy?

It is so much easier to wake up for a sunrise trip out of the city this time of year. The only problem is, there is not always a good weather for photography. In Alberta, we are blessed quite often with cloudless sky and very cold weather, which, as any of you, who practice landscape photography know, does not make good conditions for interesting shots. There is also the issue of road conditions, which can be problematic at the least and the cold itself.  It is very important to have good winter attire, because it is easy to spend over an hour in bitter cold waiting for the light to be quite right. The boots and gloves and hats, thermal underwear, all the things we skip while driving in a city, even in the middle of the coldest winter, are a must. It is very easy to get frostbite out on the prairies, where not only cold, but also winds are a factor. Having said that, there is just something magical about seeing the sun rise and color all that whiteness in pink and peach hues, the clouds become reddish pink and then orange and yellow…

So is it easy to shoot winter sunrise? No, but it is such a relaxing time. All that beauty and peace and, if you are lucky, all the good photos you can bring back, are so worth all the trouble!

A Year With Fuji – My Favorites Of 2016

A Year With Fuji – My Favorites Of 2016

I set myself a task of choosing my favorite photos of the past year. I’ve never done it before so, optimistically, I was hoping to pick only a few, but the deeper I went into my files the more and more I added to the collection. I, honestly, don’t know how to visit a location and take one, maybe two pictures and leave.  There are way too many compositions to chose from and each and every one has something unique to offer. Especially places, I know, I will not visit again (or the probability of it is rather low), I tend to photograph a lot, because these are my memories as well as pieces of photographic art (very modest of me, I know ;D).

Over the past year I was lucky to not only photograph Canada, but also Scotland and Poland. I was happy to visit new and old places, learn a few things, play with new gadgets, meet some new wonderful people and enjoy the beauty of our world. Out of several thousand of pictures I brought back with me from all that travel this year (it has been way over ten thousand kilometers, after all) I have managed to chose 49 to share today and, believe me, this was a very hard thing for me to do.  I even asked Mac to help me limit the selection and, being slightly bias that he is, he wasn’t very helpful in the process of elimination.. Some of the pictures you may have seen before, some I haven’t yet had a chance to post.  I hope you will enjoy this photographic journey with me and forgive me for not being able to make it shorter ;D

I am looking forward to this year to see where the journey takes me. I am not planning any exotic trips this year myself, but one never knows where one ends up to be. I wish you all a very happy New Year and hope you will all stay with us to witness our adventures.

Old Town Warsaw – Poland with Fuji

Old Town Warsaw – Poland with Fuji

It is time to say good-bye to Poland as well… My last evening there was spent wandering all over the Old Town in Warsaw with one of my best friends.  I love that place! I love its atmosphere and energy and its architecture.  I am very grateful for the fact that it has been beautifully restored after the damages during WWII for it would have been a tremendous loss if all that was gone…  It’s been almost a decade since I’ve visited last time and it was such a pleasure to spend several hours walking, talking and taking tons of pictures. From just before sunset, through the blue hour, into the dead of night there was something to shoot, pretty much, everywhere.  I have not taken my tripod with me, so, as the light was fading I had to find more and more creative ways to stabilize the camera, without switching to higher ISO every few minutes.  I think, I did pretty well, all things considered. Once again, I was quite satisfied with Fuji’s performance. Through the whole trip and difficult conditions (wet, cold and windy Skye, darkness of the Salt Mine in Wieliczka, rain in Cracaw..) it worked well and did not cause much trouble. The only thing I would do differently the next time I go for such an adventure, is to make sure I have wet sensor cleaning kit with me, so that I can deal with spots on camera sensor right away. With lenses being changed as often as it was happening during this trip, I ended up having to do more during post processing to clean up the spots, that I am happy with. Thank goodness for spot healing brush in PS!! ;D

Going back to that great evening I must also thank my friend, who was patiently accompanying me , after a full day of work, being dragged by me all over the place.  Agnieszka, you are amazing!! ;D

And, with that, I am saying good-bye to Europe and to all the beautiful places that I have seen, thanks to Adam (thanks again for all that you have done!!) and my brother Piotr, who went with me pretty much everywhere and, without whom, I would not have as many nice shots from Wieliczka (since he was the one that carried the tripod and took all the long exposure shots there, while I was running interference with all the guides that were chasing us away ;D).  It was great fun and I will miss you all!
