A Pretty Sunset

A Pretty Sunset

Landscape photography is always dependent on weather conditions. That’s why it requires a lot of work and expense to produce truly captivating shot (unless someone is using a computer generated sky cloning, that is). Personally I prefer waiting for the perfect sky and visit places over and over again to capture them. Then, the picture becomes really a work of art. Otherwise it is only a production line result. Yes, it is difficult to get up well before dawn every time we go to shoot a sunrise, never knowing if the conditions will be preferable or not. Driving long hours just to get to a place for sunset, to then not get the clouds, or the colors may be annoying and frustrating. I find it rather relaxing and always find something to capture, regardless the conditions. To me photography is rather an escape and means of maintaining sanity, when the stress gets to me. If I get lucky and visit a place with lovely sky and colors at sunset it is only a bonus. The experience is really what draws me to the mountains time and time again. Even if I was to bring only one shot from an expedition to the Rockies (now, we all know that that has never happened to me ;D), I would still be happy to escape the city and the stress. Especially during last year and a half, the ability to escape was truly priceless to me. Especially when we did happen to encounter a lovely sky at sunset that time 😉

From Sunrise to the Dark of Night

From Sunrise to the Dark of Night

April in Banff National Park can mean lots of snow, heavy skies, sunshine and no snow what-so-ever.. One never knows what one will find when travelling Rockies in spring. This particular time, the weather was sunny and relatively warm. Not much snow anywhere, either, except on higher elevations. Perfect condition for explorations as well as braving sunrises and sunsets and night photo sessions. We took full advantage of this as well as many other people (sometimes it is not a blessing..). All the beautiful places with an easy access, like Vermilion Lakes are becoming overcrowded with armature photographers. It would not be a bad thing if it wasn’t for the fact that some of them don’t seem to be minding the etiquette, walking in front of your camera, just when you’re in the middle of shooting star trails and any long exposure shots really. I truly believe that we all should be allowed to take a photo, however, if someone is already there, the newcomers should mind their manners.. But, enough ranting. Time to check out all those lovely little bits of Alberta Rockies I was able to capture while, generally, avoiding people ;).

Waiting for Clear Skies

Waiting for Clear Skies

In recent years we have had many days in summer when the skies were covered with heavy haze. In most cases the smoke is high enough in the air that it does not bother me too much. Today, unfortunately, is not such a day. The smoke smell is quite pronounced and it is not recommended to be outside for prolonged time. The sky is dark and one cannot even see the sun. Since I’m sitting at home, escaping smoke, I might as well spend this time productively and what is better than working on pictures from our most recent trip to the mountains?

One never knows what weather one will encounter while visiting Rockies no matter what time of year. This past April we have had a wonderful sunny skies and almost no snow on lower elevations. Thanks to this I could take my time exploring and photographing a lot of other things as well as landscapes and today, I will share some these shots. Enjoy!

Rockies in Black and White

Rockies in Black and White

It has been a while, since the last time I have created a post. Time flies, as they say ;D. Summer has arrived hereon the prairies and with it a strong heatwave. It is a long one, too and with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius, some days reaching 40 degrees, I find myself, surprisingly, longing for winter… It’s absolutely crazy! You all know I love spring and summer and all the colors that come with it and yet, today, I am posting shots from our December 2020 trip to Jasper NP and they are all in monochrome… Well, sue me, I can be artistic, too! So there! I hope you enjoy!

Macro in Pink

Macro in Pink

It’s almost spring, but it will be a while yet, here on the Alberta prairies before we see anything blooming. Thus, I thought, a bit of color will do us all good!

Pink is not my favorite color normally, but when it is natural it is quite lovely. I use the term “pink” loosely here, without getting into detailed names for shades and variations ;D. Interestingly enough, it seems like a lot of wild plants around here bloom in shades of pink, mostly so it is easily found during spring and summer months. Now, however it is gone and we will have to wait a bit before seeing it again in nature.. Thus, I bid you to enjoy looking at these lovelies!
