June at Elk Island

June at Elk Island

Time is flying by so fast! It’s already fall and with the few days of snow we have already experienced, it seems like summer was long ago.. But, it was there! I saw it, I have experienced it and I have even managed a little time to be able to go shooting. We have managed one lovely evening at Elk Island in June. It is such a pleasure to visit there when everything is covered with freshly green foliage, especially when sun is shining and sky is blue. Just a few hours of peace and quiet and total relaxation. Here is a few shots I took that time. Hope you will enjoy them. It is so nice to go back to the beginning of the warm seasons, even if it is only in memory, especially when winter is lurking so close…

Elk Island At Night

Elk Island At Night

It is an interesting experience to visit Elk Island at night.  We are a city creatures, not very comfortable with being in nature without the ability to see.  And then, there are the noises. It is so eerie to stand in the middle of nowhere, where it is pitch black and so quiet that every noise carries a long way. Hard to judge the distance separating us from the animals making that noise.  The coyotes are close by and call to each other quite often. A bison male is walking through the forest, somewhere in the vicinity.. An owl is hooting somewhere close by.. But what you hear is not as scary as what you don’t.  One time, not that long ago, we were positioned on the other side of Bison Loop shooting northern lights. Close proximity to the road, as annoying as it is because of the frequent traffic, was very lucky for us that time.  It was very quiet so we were so surprised when one of the cars crossing by spooked a large moose heading straight towards my spot.  Fortunately the animal changed direction and run away, without getting too close to me… Needless to say, we packed our gear up and moved somewhere else, where there were a bit more people close by.. Regardless of those close calls and spookiness of the night at the park I absolutely love going there to shoot the sky.  You can see so many stars there! The sky can be so very beautiful. Judge for yourselves..

Early Spring Last Year

Early Spring Last Year

Sunsets are not that easy to photograph in early spring. During the week there is simply not enough time to get sufficiently far away from the city to catch it, during weekends – the weather does not often cooperate.  Last year we took several trips to try and get nice shots and even managed to visit Spaca Moskalyk, an old Ukrainian church, that has become somewhat famous, in our neck of the woods, over the last few years because of the preservation efforts on it’s behalf. We didn’t bring a lot of pictures back from those trips. Such is the lot of a landscape photographer… Lots of hard work to produce results, but we have managed to have fun nonetheless ;D. Enjoy!

When Fall Comes Calling

When Fall Comes Calling

Seems my back log of pictures from previous years is rather scary.  I think, it’s time to do something about it ;DIt might be a bit out of the season, but I haven’t done any fall posts for a long time so here it is..

It happens fast, here in Alberta.  Colors begin to turn, first frost comes, windy day happens and we have no more color left.. We try to find time to go out before winter comes to capture a bit of fall splendor.  Sometimes, we even are successful ;D Here is a few fall landscapes from last year. Considering the fact, that Mother Nature has finally decided to wake up, I better get on with it.. I’ll be posting spring next! ;D

From Rare Summer Outings

From Rare Summer Outings

Last summer wasn’t as full of outings as I would have liked. Time, seems to be more and more a rare commodity and trying to fit a trip outside the city can be rather difficult.  I treasure every one of those outings.  Even, if I don’t bring a lot of pictures back, it is a pleasure to just wander, letting the road take us, wherever it goes.  Nothing to lead us, but a whim.  Let’s hope we will have many more opportunities to exploring our province this year..

Winter on the Prairies

Winter on the Prairies

They call it cabin fever, when you can’t spend another moment enclosed in the house and be stuck in the city and not be able to see the wider world… I have been suffering from it for a while when, one winter afternoon, we have managed our escape and found our way out into the rural Alberta again.  I love those trips! No matter where we end up going, there is always something new to discover. Whether it is an abandoned old building, windblown field covered in snow drifts of horses grazing in a distance… This trip was no different and at the end we have found a lovely place called St. Peter & Paul Russo Orthodox Church (or Dickie Bush for short) just in time for a sunset.  The church is positioned on top of one of the hills allowing a nice view of the surrounding area. It is neighboring a cemetery with a picturesque tree in the center. Surrounding farms and the road leading to it are lovely as well, especially bathed in the sunset light. All in all another successful escape from the city ;D
