A Bit Of Spring Never Hurt Anybody..

A Bit Of Spring Never Hurt Anybody..

As the winter tortures us with it’s freezing cold, I can’t help but think of spring… It is a great time of year, when snow melts in the warm sun, things are starting to wake up and slowly colors come back to brighten the word. Spring macros are such a pleasure to shoot. After long winter months it’s so good to see the colors. It’s great to look for new, pretty things to take a picture of. And, since we still have some time before it happens, I’ll share a few shots from previous springs. It’s so nice to look at them, isn’t it? ;D

Snow..

Snow..

Regrettably, I did not have a chance recently to go and photograph snowflakes, despite of it’s snowing on and off quite often.. It is not as simple as one would think. It takes a good macro lens, a steady hand, good shooting conditions and a goodly amount of warm clothing, so that you don’t freeze, being stationary for long time in -20oC weather. If it’s too windy or too warm it won’t work very well. Macro work requires stability of the object one is trying to photograph, especially when the light is not very strong (sunshine will melt snowflakes too quickly so it is better to be in shade, not mentioning that you can easily overexpose the shot). If it’s too warm, the snowflakes become shapeless too soon, and you’ll get no good results at all. In other words what you need is good conditions, time, patience and fortitude… Since I have been rather short on time lately (you do notice, I am boasting here a bit about having plenty of patience and fortitude ;D) and good shooting conditions, I decided to share a bit of my older attempts at snowflake photography. Enjoy!

It’s finally Spring!!

It’s finally Spring!!

It has been an unusually long winter for us, poor things living on the prairies, but finally, we are blessed with a beautiful sunny days and the lack of snow ;D  Things are starting to grow and pretty soon the world will be green again. For now, it’s only the trees that show signs of moving in the right direction, but it should change pretty soon.

I took my camera yesterday on our walk with the dog and managed to take a few images.  Haven’t had time to process them all, but even a little bit is better than nothing, right?  Enjoy!

A Little Macro Never Hurt Anybody..

A Little Macro Never Hurt Anybody..

I have said it before and, I’m going to say it again. There is nothing better than looking at some colorful macros when it’s freezing cold outside, days are short and the world is covered in white.  I think, considering how cold it has been so far on the prairies, that we all deserve a bit of color therapy.  But before we go there I would like to write a few words about macro photography.  It is the best kind of photography because you don’t need to go far to indulge in it.  All you need is a decent lens, if you can’t afford a macro lens, you can invest in an extension tube (these are much less expensive) and a decent park, or even your own garden will do in a pinch. Most of my macros are shot in my backyard or close to home, when I take my camera for a dog walk.  All it takes is a good light and an interesting object and you are golden.  I find it very peaceful and relaxing and, later on, a pleasure to work with and look at, when all the colors of growing season are gone.  I hope you will enjoy looking at the results of my explorations as much as I do, especially this time of year, and maybe, consider doing it for yourself when spring arrives. Good luck!

Happy New Year! (From Frozen Solid Alberta)

Happy New Year! (From Frozen Solid Alberta)

I, simply, cannot believe, how fast this year has passed.  It seems like just a moment ago I have had a hard task of selecting photos I liked the most from last year and now, I have to do it all over again.  However, I will not be showing you my selection in this post, due to some minor technical difficulties. Instead I will share my latest images.

I’m not sure, if I’ve mentioned before how wonderfully warm beginning of this winter was here on the prairies. It was quite amazingly warm and, though, it was not the best thing from photographic point of view, I was quite happily enjoying the long walks with our dog and the fact that I didn’t have to put 10 layers of clothing on myself every time I was heading outside. Now, however, the time of reckoning has come and it is no longer as pleasant as it was. I venture to say, we haven’t suffer such cold weather for a decade now. Our temperatures dropped to below -30oC with windchills, in places, reaching -50oC… It feels colder because this cooling of happened very suddenly so we had no time to adjust just yet. I am sure, not very many people are crazy enough to go out and shoot anything in this weather. We, however, are..  We have decided, it would be fun to try and photograph freezing soap bubbles, among other things (such as Mac disappearing boiling water – little magic always helps in this cold ;D).. Good thing was, we were close to home (mostly, in our back yard) so we were able to run into the house quickly to warm up, when it’s gotten too cold and, believe me, we did that quite a few times during shooting.  But, I’ve managed to get several pictures which I will be happy to share with you tonight. And, since this is going to be my last post of this year, I wish you all a wonderful New Year! May it be peaceful and happy for all of us!

Playing With Snow

Playing With Snow

One of my favorite things to do, after a fresh snowfall, is to go out and look for nice snowflakes to photograph. Snowflakes are quite fascinating and so lovely to look at. It needs to be rather cold for perfect snowflakes to form and stay that way for a bit.  If it’s too windy, they will be blown away or, simply, be destroyed (not mentioning impossibility to focus one’s lens on them). If it’s sunny they will melt.. One has to be able to go out quickly after, or during a snowfall, to catch them at their best. It requires a huge amount of patience and warm clothes and one ends up with hundreds of pictures from which, only a fraction can be used.  In spite of all this, I find myself going out quite often, when conditions are good, and shooting. Their fragility prompts me to take more photos of them. After all, when they are gone, they are gone.. And, since it looks like we might not get any more snow before Christmas, here is a few snowflakes shots from the past.. I hope you enjoy!
