Winter Sunrise With A Bison

Winter Sunrise With A Bison

One good thing about winter is that you don’t have to get up at some ungodly hour of the night to shoot a sunrise. Since Mac was complaining lately that he had not done any photography for a while, I decided to drag him to Elk Island for a sunrise, at the beginning of December. It was a cold, frosty morning, but we were dressed warmly and were ready to spend a couple of hours out in the elements. We were lucky to encounter a bison herd at Bison Loop as well. Such a lovely sight to see them all highlighted by the pink rays of the rising sun, too! The frost covered grasses and other plants were sparkling all over. It is such a pity that a normal picture cannot truly show all the glory of all that glitter! After staying for a bit at Bison Loop, we took a ride around the park and on a couple of neighboring roads before we drove back home. Here is a few pictures I shot that morning. Enjoy!

May in Elk Island

May in Elk Island

Time flies! It’s already fall and I can’t help but feel that this year is flying by way too quickly. I was looking for some inspiration today. It’s a cold, gloomy day today and I’m in need of some cheering up. I happened upon some of the pictures I took in May at Elk Island National Park, when spring has just started and we had plenty of time of good weather and sunshine to look forward to. It’s good to have memories like that to look at, when it’s not the best time to wander about outside, thus I’ve decided to share them with you, in hope of brightening your day as well. For those of us, here in Alberta experiencing their first winter storm of the season (I can barely believe myself that today some parts of the province are expecting to get 20cm of snow!). I guess, I shouldn’t be complaining about our weather in Edmonton, since, it is not snowing yet and we enjoy balmy plus 1oC .. Oh joy!! So, here it is, a bit of spring sunshine and nature (we even saw the elusive elk at Elk Island that day, among other animals, and they can be quite shy on occasion). Enjoy!!

Aurora in the City

Aurora in the City

We all love watching northern lights. Even when they are week, we will strain our eyes and stare at the night sky to see them. The best viewing is, of course, outside the city, where there is no light pollution and the sky is dark. Cities are, generally, not the best places to watch them. However, there are nights, when the lights are very bright and quite easily viewable even inside Edmonton. Don’t believe me? Well, let me prove it to you. All the pictures from this post were taken inside Edmonton. Enjoy ;D

One Fall Weekend at Jasper National Park

One Fall Weekend at Jasper National Park

A few years back we were lucky enough to be able to visit Jasper National Park during fall. It is always wonderful to take a ride through the Rockies, but during autumn, if you’re lucky enough to get there when the colors are turning, it is even more fantastic. During that particular trip, we had a great weather. We took our time enjoying the clear mountain air, blue skies, colorful trees and wonderful views. We stopped at many of our favorite places, hiking here and there and taking as many pictures as possible ;D. I knew there would be time when I would go back to those images and enjoy re-visiting the wonderful colors and views we have experienced then. That time has come and it is with a great pleasure that I share these shots with you, especially now, when winter rules the world and the memories of warmer and more colorful world are very welcome.

Winter Morning at the Park

Winter Morning at the Park

Rundle Park here in Edmonton has always been one of my favorite places to visit within the city. Located in River Valley, not very far from where we live, gives us a quick access to a bit of nature, with added bonus of many kinds of available family activities, all year round. It is the place I go to if I don’t have much time for a longer trip, to relax and spend some time with my camera ;D. It looks lovely any time of year (see the fall post The Short Lived Fall Of 2018), but I find myself drawn to it more often during winter months, especially during foggy mornings when it’s cold and there is a chance of hoar frost covering all the trees and shrubs, or when it is snowing. But, I don’t mind a visit during a sunny morning either. It has been cloudy and dark for the past couple of day, so when we saw clear sky and sun this morning we have decided to make the trip and visit the park. The sunny weather did not last too long, but it did not matter. By the time we lost the light we were a bit frozen and decided to head home. Before we got to the car we have stumbled upon a treesome of coyotes wandering about and I’ve managed to get a few shots of them as well (just an added bonus ;D). Here is a few pictures I took during that morning. Enjoy!

How This Fall Begun At Elk Island

How This Fall Begun At Elk Island

As the snow accumulates outside I decided to share some more fall pictures. There is time enough during winter to share winter images, I think.. I mean to try and postpone them a bit longer ;D.. I did not have many chances to be out with a camera but I have managed to drag Mac with me a couple of times outside the city and visit Elk Island at the beginning of the season, just as the leaves begun to change colors. It might seem boring, to go to the same spots over and over again, but every time we are there I find something to take a picture of. It is such a wonderful thing to escape life for a couple of hours and enjoy the peace and quiet and just take a moment to see the world. Hope you will have a chance to experience such seeing from time to time. And if not, there are always pictures 😉
